Bay face replay at the Shay

Colwyn Bay travel to The Shay tomorrow evening for their FA Trophy Third Round Qualifying replay with Halifax.

 The opening tie finished goalless in gale force conditions at Llanelian Road, but the Seagulls had two golden chances early on to clinch the tie.

The North Walians, however, will be happy in that they have the chance at a replay, with Chris Sanna’s penalty save proving vital for the hosts.

A home tie against Blue Square Premier outfit Lincoln City in the FA Trophy first round proper will be the reward if Jon Newby’s men can bag a win.

Welsh League Round Up

Welsh League round-up AFC Porth closed the gap on division one leaders Cambrian & Clydach to six points with a 3-1 win at home against Aberaman Athletic.

 A Craig Wells double and a goal from Jared Wright gave second-placed Porth victory after Cambrian & Clydach had been held to a draw by Ton Pentre on Friday night. 

Nathan White struck twice in Taffs Well’s impressive 4-1 thumping of title-chasing West End with James Dixon and Jamal Roberts also on the scoresheet for the hosts.

 Goytre United moved up to fourth with a 3-0 away win at Pontardawe Town. Robert Shannon, Liam McGinty and an own goal gave Goytre the three points. 

There were also wins for Cardiff Corinthians, Barry Town and Haverfordwest County.

 In division two, Monmouth Town moved 10 points clear at the summit with a 4-1 success over struggling Aberbargoed Buds. Dan MacDonald found the back of the net twice while the other goals came from Elliot Ford and Matt Bowen. 

Croesyceiliog could only manage a point in a goalless draw against Treharris Athletic Western while there was a remarkable 10-goal thriller in Cardiff as Ely Rangers beat Caerleon 6-4. 

With a number of games in hand over the sides above them, fifth-placed Tata Steel kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 win at Penrhiwceiber Rangers. Mike Davies, Matthew Herman and Liam Sirocco were all on target while basement club Bettws lost 2-0 at Dinas Powys. 

Garden Village drew 2-2 with Caldicot Town and Caerau won 3-1 at Newcastle Emlyn. 

With Bridgend Street’s clash at Newport Civil Service off, division three leaders Pontypridd Town took advantage to go four points clear with a 3-2 win at Abertillery Bluebirds. 

Gareth Jones, Gavin Jones, Richard Evans and Rory Healy scored Briton Ferry Llansawel’s goals in their 4-1 success over Risca United while Llanwern, UWIC, AFC Llwydcoed and Undy Athletic all picked up three points.

Pacemakers Pontrhydyfen remain in pole position

Pacemakers Pontrhydyfen remain clear at the top of Division Six West thanks to a try bonus 31-0 triumph at South Gower.

The leaders crossed the hosts' line five times through a Rhodri Morris double with Rob Sutton, Lee Rogers and Gareth Morris also touching down. Aled Bevan added three conversions.

Penybanc meanwhile continue to hunt down the leaders after a 72-10 demolition of strugglers Blaeanau.

The highfliers helped themselves to twelve tries including hat tricks for wing Chris Davies and centre Geraint Evans, while captain Cellan Harris and wing Geraint Davies both bagged doubles. Scrumhalf Matthew Ladd and centre Nathan Jenkins also went over, with Matthew Lloyd landing six conversions.

Elsewhere, Llangadog edged out Pantyffynnon, 20-17, and Fall Bay overcame Llansawel, 20-10.

Celtic extend lead at top

Maesteg Celtic remain on pole in Division Four South West, edging to a 11-6 home victory over Trebanos.

Celtic went over for the only try of the match through Mike Paget, while Nathan Healey slotted two crucial penalties.

Banws did bag a losing bonus point thanks to two Sean Rayman penalties.

Second placed Cwmavon slipped further behind Celtic at the top when they went down 23-19 at fellow highfliers Resolven at Vaughan Field.

The Neath side crossed for three tries through a Lloyd Morgan double, with Dai Dyer also going over. Richard Morgan added a conversion and landed two penalties.

The visitors meanwhile will have to be content with a losing bonus point thanks to an Andy Cotty touchdown, and three penalties and a conversion from Ceri Palmer.

Meanwhile, Pyle heaped more woe on struggling Pontardawe, inflicting the Swansea Valley side’s ninth defeat of the season, 59-16 at Brynglas Field.

The hosts helped themselves to nine tries with John Waller touching down for four of them while Lee Williams, Paul Clapham, Steve Evans, Matthew Paire and John Futlon also touched down.

There was nothing between Briton Ferry and Abercrave, 20-20 when the two sides met.

Ferry outscored their rivals three tries to two through scores from Ashley Rosser, James Hopkins and Aled Thomas, with Chris Jones adding a conversion and a penalty.

Elsewhere, Glyncorrwg picked up their fourth win with a 18-7 triumph at Birchgrove and Neath Athletic defeated Nantyffyllon 18-13 at Cwrt Herbert.

Phil Thomas one man show sees off Rhiwbina

Highflying Llanishen notched up their ninth win in Division Three South East, bagging a 22-13 home victory over neighbours Rhiwbina, despite being down to 14 men for over an hour when a second row was sent off for a spear tackle.

The hosts' hero of the day was Phil Thomas who amassed all of his team’s points through a race away interception touchdown, as well as firing home three penalties, a conversion and slotting two drop goals

The Squirrels' only try of the match came before the interval when a well worked move saw James Egan going over, Richard Saltmarsh added the extras to two earlier penalties.

In the second half, Rhiwbina were also reduced to 14 players for most of it with two players receiving yellow cards, before Nick Howell went off injured leaving the visitors with 14 men for the final 20 minutes as they had used up all of their substitutes.

Brecon notched up their fifth win with a 25-17 home success over Dowlais.

The hosts bagged a try bonus thanks to touchdowns from Eifion Jones, Owen Morgan, Seb Evans and Rob Price, while Gary Davies added one conversion and a penalty.

The Dragons meanwhile could only muster two tries through Rob Downes and James Churchill, with Downes also firing home a penalty and both conversions.

Meanwhile, Nelson swooped to the summit with a 76-22 rampage against Penarth. The highfliers outscored the visitors twelve tries to three.

Ystrad return to winning ways

Leaders Ystrad Rhonnda bounced back from last week’s defeat to record their eleventh win in Division Two East with a 17-8 victory at Bedlinog.

Alex Webber was the star man for the pacemakers, notching up all of his team’s points through a try, conversion and three penalties.

The hosts' only try came through Nathan Rees.

Penallta’s impressive run of form continued with a 46-3 demolition of Abercynon.

The Pitmen helped themselves to seven tries including a brace for captain Keiran Mahoney, with Rhys Clarke, Andrew Soroko, Gareth Edwards, Gavin Jones and Lee Thomas also crossing the whitewash. Soroko also fired home a penalty and four conversions.

Ynysybwl also recovered from their loss last week to produce an impressive 42-7 dismantling of Tylorstown.

Bwl, who sit in second place, crossed for six tries through Dale Stuckey, Andrew Lloyd, Nathan King, Aled Thomas, Oliver Rees and Gareth King. Richard Tibbs added the extras to all six touchdowns.

Meaanwhile, Heol y Cyw bagged their ninth win with a 21-3 victory at Llantrisant, but the visitors fell just short of a try bonus point, only crossing for three touchdowns.

Elsewhere, Rhydyfelin put Rhymney to the sword in a 37-6 thumping and Fleur de Lys defeated Llantwit Fadrew 25-17.

The Blues maintain grip at the top

Haverfordwest maintained their hold at the top of Division Three West with a hard-fought, 10-6 home success over Cardigan.

In dreadful conditions that made running rugby seemingly impossible at times, all of the game’s points were scored before the interval.

The Blues crossed for the only try of the match coming from winger Dan Birch who slid over in the corner, with outside half Steve Williams landing the conversion from out wide to add to his earlier penalty.

The visitors' Mike Diggle bagged all of his side's points with two penalties to bag a losing bonus point.

Llandeilo are five points off the pace despite picking up a 29-12 home success over Lampeter.

The hosts' star of the show was Kelvin Davies, who amassed 19 points with the boot in difficult conditions at Cae William, through five penalties and converting both Glyn Jones and Aled Jenkins touchdowns.

In the battle at the bottom, Gorseinon came out victorious 21-5 against Tenby United.

Gors outscored their rivals three tries to one including a brace for prop Josh John, with Alyn Evans also touching down. Outside half Andrew Colwill fired home two penalties.

The hosts meanwhile remain in the bottom two after only being able to conjure a first half unconverted try from centre Toby Davies.

Dunvant notched up their seventh win, narrowly coming out on top 27-23 against Pontyberem at Broadacre.

The hosts touched down for four tries through an Adam Williams brace with Danny Davies and Sam Gallagher also touching down. Williams also slotted two conversions and a penalty.

Elsewhere, Newcastle Emlyn picked up a good 20-9 home win over Tumble.

The Red and Whites crossed twice through Gethin Greaves and Alex Williams, while Leighton McKenna fired home two penalties and added both conversions.

Finally, Penclawdd notched up their seventh victory running out 16-12 home winners over Pontarddulais.

Quins impressive run continues

Aberavon Quins moved into the top four in Division Two West for the first time this season with an impressive 29-14 victory over Cwmllynfell.

Paul Morgan’s men, who have been steadily moving up the table, ran in four tries through Michael Parfitt, Chris Jones, Matthew Morgan and Jamie Davies, while Matthew Potsuma fired home a penalty and three conversions.

The visitors, whose form seems to have dipped in recent weeks, were restricted to two touchdowns from Alex Wilkins, with Craig Jones adding both conversions.

Pacemakers Glynneath notched up their tenth victory with a hardfought 23-15 win over Loughor at Villa Field.

Both sides played some entertaining rugby in difficult conditions but it was the leaders that came out on top thanks to touchdowns from full back Dai Evans and backrow Grant Bignall, while the talented Jack O’Reily proved to be the difference, stroking home three penalties and both conversions.

The Blues meanwhile will feel a little hard done by to narrowly miss out on a losing bonus point, after themselves crossed twice through wing Richard Thomas and centre Jason Howells. Peter Smiriglia landed a conversion and a penalty.

Meanwhile, Maesteg finally secured their first point, albeit a losing bonus point, with the Llynfi Valley side losing out 8-6 at Felinfoel, but with new coach Richard Webster at the helm, things are looking up for the strugglers.

Felinfoel crossed for the only try of the match in the first half through Dan Thomas, with Rhys Williams slotting a penalty to take an 8-0 advantage into the interval.

It was Maesteg, however, that had the better of the second half with Aled Thomas slotting two penalties and the Llynfi Valley should have pinched victory at the death, but their penalty attempt drifted just wide of the upright.

Elsewhere, Kenfig Hill remain hot on the heels of pacemakers Glynneath after the Mules picked up a 16-3 victory at Kidwelly, with Tom Briggs going over for the only try of the match.

Crymych’s form continues to improve after seemlingly getting the monkey off their back with a win a couple of weeks back and the new boys picked up their second, running out 21-5 home victors over Builth Wells.

Finally, Skewen notched up their fifth win defeating Aberystwyth 17-10 at Plascrug.

Steelmen prove their metal

Trailblazers Ebbw Vale continued their impressive form at the top of Division One East, picking up a 28-12 victory over Beddau at Mount Pleasant Park.

The Steelmen were trailing at the break, 12-7, but moved up a gear after the interval, adding to their first half penalty try with scores from Charlie Simpson, Nicky Coughlin and Tom Ashmead to bag the try bonus point. The ever reliable Dorian Jones added all four conversions.

The hosts had looked to be on course for an upset crossing for two early tries though Bradley Coombes and Robert Jones, with Cameron Pimlow adding a conversion, but it all began to fall apart before the break, conceding a penalty try and then having to go to passive scrums after the interval.

Newbridge slipped to another uncharacteristic defeat at struggling Glamorgan Wanderers, going down 22-9 at the Memorial Ground.

The Wanderers bounced back from their drubbing last week to run in three second half touchdowns through Owen Marshall, Dan Lovell and talented centre Joe Xiberras. Gareth Cull slotted two conversions to add to his first half penalty.

Newbridge, who created many problems for themselves, were restricted to three first half Bevan Howells penalties.

Meanwhile, Treorchy staged a second half fightback to bag their seventh win, running out 34-15 victors over Merthyr at the Oval with proceedings not getting underway till 3pm, as the referee got lost on his way to the ground.

The Zebras, trailing 15-3 at the break, were brought back to life in the second half by braces for Tristan Lazarus and centre Peter Hutchins. Outside half Celyn Ashton had another solid afternoon firing home two penalties and all four conversions.

The Ironmen’s scores came through Geraint Edmunds and Aaran Howard touchdowns, with Jonathan Foster slotting a penalty and a conversion.

Elsewhere, Gilfach Goch broke into the top three with a dominant 30-6 home success over Rumney at the Welfare Ground

Gowch ran in three tries through back row James Lock and a brace from centre Sean Roberts while Ian Davies notched up 15 points with the boot.

The visitors meanwhile could only manage two Dan Clarke penalties either side of the interval.

Elsewhere,  Bargoed remain four points off the summit thanks to a try bonus, 28-0 home win over Mountain Ash.

The high-flyers made light work of the newcomers and crossed four times through Rhys Humphries, Lee Pearson, Lewis Wayman and Matthew Hurley, with the latter also slotting three conversions and Josh Prosser stroking home another.

Finally, the match between Tredegar and Blackwood was postponed as the ground was double booked by the WRU, staging both that match and Tredegar Ironsides' clash with Pill Harriers, which incidentally ended up being called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

Narberth swoop to the summit

Narberth took full advantage of leaders Llangennech’s slip up to swoop to the summit of Division One West for the first time this season with a narrow 20-18 victory over Tondu at a wet and windy Pandy Park.

The Otters crossed for twice either side of half time with Timosci Kaumaitotya and captain Steve Martin both touching down, while outside half Nick Jones was the hero of the day for the visitors kicking ten points, including a crucial penalty five minutes from time.

Both teams were reduced to 14 players when a punch-up broke out, with Narberth losing flanker Gareth Bateman and the hosts' wing Darren Thomas also being dismissed.

The Waterwheelers once again put in a performance that belies their position in the table playing good rugby in difficult conditions and touched down twice in the opening half through Mark Roberts and David Griggs. Dean Thomas landed a conversion and slotted two penalties.

Llanharan produced the surprise of the day defeating former pacemakers Llangennech 16-0 at the Dairy Field.

It was perhaps no shock that in difficult conditions the streetwise hosts' pack came to the fore, dominating at the set piece throughout. The Dairymen took a 6-0 lead into the interval thanks to two Chris Williams penalties and sealed the win by crossing for two second half touchdowns through flanker Scott Malone and wing Josh Austin.

Tata Steel sit just one point off the top thanks to their ninth victory coming out on top, 13-7, in a low scoring encounter against Bridgend Athletic at Newbridge Fields.

The honours were even going into the break at 7-7, but two second half penalties from the ever reliable boot of outside half Diggy Bird saw the Steelmen home to a crucial win. Bird also converted Tylan Mafi’s first half touchdown.

Athletic, who have now lost four on the bounce, will have to be content with a losing bonus point courtesy of a James Olds try, which Tom Davies added the extras to.

Meanwhile, UWIC released the shackles to run out 44-13 home winners over Ammanford.

The students crossed the visitors' line five times through props Jordan Saunders and Mick Halse, with flankers Craig Howells and Kyle Taylor also going over in the first half, and wing Pierre Tucker crossing the whitewash after the break. Mark Cooke added fourteen points with the boot and replacement fly half Rhydian Morris landed a penalty and conversion.

Newcomers Ammanford were restricted to a first half try from Samson Lee with young outside half Carwyn Richards slotting a conversion and two penalties.

Elsewhere, struggling Bonymaen fell to their ninth defeat, going down 14-9 at Whitland.

The Borderers' Jack Mason touched down in the first half and bagged the victory thanks to two Nico Setaro penalties, with Scott Newton adding another.

Bony meanwhile could only manage a first half Paul Warlow penalty but Richie Cunniffe crossed the whitewash after the interval to bag a losing bonus point.

Finally, Waunarlwydd’s poor run of results continued, slipping to a 34-7 home loss at the hands of Carmarthen Athletic.

Athletic helped themselves to five tries through Luke Marshall, Scott Maynard, Tom Sloane, Gareth Bennett and Pan Rashesa. Maynard also added three conversions and a penalty.

The Green and Blacks' only try of the match came in the first half through Matthew Wedlake, with Johnny Davies firing home the conversion.

Scarlets clinch semi-final spot

Blues North U16 travelled to Parc y Scarlets on Wednesday evening to take on the Scarlets in what was a must-win game for the West Wales region, and the hosts didn’t disappoint, outscoring their rivals 23-19.

The Blues arrived in strong and confident mood, looking to gain revenge for the defeat they suffered earlier in the season at Abercynon.

The visitors started with real intent scoring two tries within the opening five minutes for winger Morgan Raison and fullback Josh Williams to take a 12-0 lead.

The Scarlets responded well and the evening’s third try came soon after, with the West Wales outfit getting on the scoreboard when winger Luke Morris raced in after the Blues were penalised at the scrum.

The hosts now looked a real danger in attack, especially with outside half Daniel Jones pulling the strings, keeping his side camped deep in to Blues territory.

It seemed as though a second try was imminent for the Scarlets and despite pushing strongly on the Blues’ try line, the ball was lost forward, but eventually got their reward on 28 minutes when speedster Morris bagged his second of the night

The Blues failed to lie down though and responded with a touchdown of their own to take a 10-19 advantage, but it was the hosts that would have the final say before the interval, with centre Matthew Pearce crossing the whitewash to reduce the visitors' lead to 19-15.

The second half saw the same intensity with both teams pushing hard to the try line but neither were able to capitalise.

However, it was the Scarlets that finally made the breakthrough first, firing home a penalty and then touching down for a well taken try to seal a 23-19 victory and secure their place in the semi-finals of the WRU Age Grade Championship.

Dockers handed stern test in FAW Trophy

SWANSEA Dockers will face a tough trip to South Wales Amateur League side Ton & Gelli BGC in the fourth round of the FAW Trophy.

The Dockers, second in the Swansea Senior League first division, were drawn to face the Rhondda outfit on January 14 after beating Llandrindod Wells in round three last weekend.

Two goals from Kyle Morgan, one from Anthony Price and an own goal gave the Swansea club a 4-2 victory to put them one win away from the quarter-finals.

Ton & Gelli are currently fourth in the first division of their league and accounted for Aberaeron in the last round, winning 4-3 at home against the west Walians.

Newport YMCA, Risca United and Abercarn United were all kept apart in the draw for the FAW Trophy fourth round.

While Abercarn and Risca both have home ties, the YMCA, fifth in MacWhirter Welsh League division two, are on the road following last weekend’s extra-time victory at home against Llangynwyd Rangers in round three.

They visit South Wales Senior League second division side Sully Sports on January 14 with the quarter-finals just one win away.

Spar Mid Wales League first division leaders Rhayader Town travel to Abercarn and South Wales Amateur League division two outfit Hirwaun Welfare go to Risca.

Wanderers aiming for complete performance against Newbridge

Glamorgan Wanderers who were outclassed at Ebbw Vale last weekend, face another stern test when they welcome Newbridge to the Memorial Ground tomorrow.

“We must find a way to compete at every aspect of the game, at present we are not putting together complete performances” commented head coach Chris Ower before the visit of Newbridge.

“Newbridge will be smarting after their defeat at home last week. They will be keen to get back to winning ways. We must gain parity up front, if we are to have any chance.” added forwards coach Matthew Bolton.

For the visit of Newbridge the Wanderers make 4 changes to the side that came out second best at Ebbw Vale. In the backs Mike Stephens, last week’s try scorer, retains his place at full back after coming on as a sub and Charlie Johnson returns to the centre after missing last week’s game through injury. Up front Alex Bourne comes in as open-side flanker and Ross Grimstone gets his first start at hooker. Rhodri Dawes and Sean Carroll also join the squad for the first time.

Beddau picked up a good win last weekend and have been tough to beat at home this year, and should therefore prove a decent test for the well-organised Ebbw Vale, but I see the Steel Men’s clinical backs having just too much for the hosts.

Gilfach Goch v Rumney

Goch, who are on a six match winning streak, will be desperate to remain within close proximity of the top three. Rumney have had a mixed bag of a season so far but are definitely capable of pulling out big performances.

High-flying Newbridge will be eager to banish the memories of last week’s defeat by basement boys Tredegar and I think the Wanderers' suspect defence may prove just the tonic.

Bridgend Athletic v Tata Steel

Athletic’s misery on their travels continued last weekend when they lost out narrowly at struggling Bonymaen and, after losing three on the bounce, the Bridgend outfit will be glad to walk out to the welcoming comforts of Newbridge Fields. The Steelmen, who although haven't lost since the first week of October, have rather stuttered to wins of late and were out played for much of last week’s victory against Tondu.

Verdict - Tata Steel by 4 points

Llanharan v Llangennech

Llanharan picked up a good win in the reverse fixture between these sides and have been strong at home so far this season. Leaders Llangennech, however, have been producing some very good performances this year but have been prone to the odd slip-up like the narrow loss at Bonymaen, but if they keep their concentration for the full 80 minutes they should pick up another win.

Verdict - Llangennech by 7 points

Tondu v Narberth

The Waterwheelers will take a lot of heart out of last week’s defeat at Tata Steel with the new boys knowing that perhaps with a bit more experience at this level, they would have come away with a win. The Otters, who were many people’s favourites for the title before the season, have been steadily making their way towards the top of the table despite their shaky start.

Verdict - Narberth by 10 points

UWIC v Ammanford

The students have lost the last three on the bounce, slipping to mid-table but the youngsters, with such a strong squad to chose from, look to be coming back to form after only going down at Llangennech to a last minute drop goal.
