Dowlais claim Three South East title

Dowlais lifted the National League Division Three South East title with a 22-18 away win over Pentyrch on April 30, giving them a total of 91 league points.

Dowlais captain James Quirk lifts the trophy.

The match was fiercely contested, but Dowlais managed to take the title
in the final few minutes with a converted try, turning the game over
from what had previously looked to be a victory for Pentyrch.

Team captain James Quirk said: “It’s a fantastic feeling to be lifting
this trophy for all the boys on the team. It was a tough match against
Pentyrch, and we really had to work hard to win, but I wouldn’t have had
it any other way.

"This season has gone well for us. We’ve really
improved on fitness, which has made all the difference to our game, and
our players have dedicated themselves to training sessions in all
weathers.

“The support network within the club has been fantastic: from the
committee to the sponsors, and all our friends and families – the
atmosphere our supporters have created has really encouraged the boys,
even in difficult games like this one.

“This is an exciting promotion for us and we’re looking forward to our
next season in Division Two.”

Dowlais is one of the youngest clubs in the SWALEC leagues. Since
becoming a WRU club 12 years ago, it has progressed from Junior Division
to Division Two in just 12 seasons.

They count former Premiership player Kristian Owen as one of their three
coaches, and the centre, who has played for Ebbw Vale, Pontypridd and, most
recently, Bedwas, said: “This was a fantastic match for us to win the
league with. Pentyrch put up a good fight, but our boys did even better
and I’m proud to see them lift the trophy today.

“Dowlais is a fast-growing club, despite its youth, and this promotion
really demonstrates that. It wouldn’t have been possible without the
huge dedication shown by all the players and the fantastic support we
have at the club house. This victory has been a team effort and is
well-deserved.”
