Haverfordwest’s Becky Harries was crowned Welsh Ladies Close
Champion at Nefyn on the Llŷn Peninsula
yesterday for the second time in three years.
The 2011 winner lost her title last May to Amy Boulden, but
recaptured her crown with a tense 2&1 victory in the final over Wrexham's
rising star Chloe Williams.
An overjoyed Harries described herself as “on top of the
world” after her triumph, saying: “I am really happy.
“I’ve got a couple of 36-hole tournaments and then it’s the
British Amateur coming up in a few weeks. I am really confident going in to
that after this week.”
Williams made the better start and won two of the first
three holes but then the Haverfordwest star came roaring back, taking five of
the next six to turn for home three ahead.
Still three up with five to play, Harries looked on course
for a comfortable win but Williams collected back to back birdies to reduce the
deficit to one. After halves at the next, Harries eagled the long 17th where
she rattled in a 15-foot putt to lift the crown.
"I just kept going when Chloe was in front and believed
my chance would come," said the new champion.
Harries had opened her day with a potentially tough
semi-final against Cottrell Park’s Gemma Bradbury, who sensationally knocked
Curtis Cup winner Boulden out in the quarters the day before, and in the end
only a hole separated them.
Williams had made the final thanks to a 3&2 victory over
former Welsh international Katherine O’Connor in the semis.
