Newport County have
made former Chelsea defender Harry Worley their third summer signing.
Worley, 24, began his career at Stockport County before
Chelsea paid £150,000 to take him to Stamford Bridge.
He failed to make a first team appearance under Jose Mourinho,
despite being an unused substitute in the 2007 Community Shield loss to Manchester
United, but had loan spells at Doncaster Rovers, Carlisle United and Leicester
City, where he moved permanently.
But again a lack of first team action at the King Power
Stadium saw him loaned out to Luton Town and Crewe Alexandra before he joined
Oxford United in 2010, making more than 50 appearances and scoring twice.
He was released by the Us at the end of last season, where
he was a team-mate of fellow new signing Adam Chapman who joined earlier this
month. The 6ft 4inches defender has been given a one-year deal at Rodney Parade.
As with Chapman and new striker Chris Zebroski, Newport boss
Justin Edinburgh said he had got the man he wanted, adding: “Things are
starting to take shape as we head into a busy pre-season schedule next month.
“There are a couple more targets I would like to add, but as
in the past I will not name them until it’s done and dusted and the ink is
dry.”
Newport’s ‘silence until signed’ policy seems to have worked
for them so far as they continue preparations for their first Football League
campaign in 25 years. They managed to beat off other suitors to Worley’s
signature, with a utility full-back also said to be close to signing.
Edinburgh is then set to run the rule over a number of trialists
when the playing staff return for pre-season, with a goalkeeper to provide
competition for No1 Lenny Pidgeley a priority.
