Championship side Beddau RFC have announced the return of former fans' favourite Brett
Davey as their head coach for the forthcoming season, replacing Robert Downes
in the hot seat.
Davey had a previously successful tenure at the Green and Golds leading
them to the Division One East title in 2006/07, while also picking up the Mid
District Cup on five consecutive occasions between 2003/04-2006/07.
The former fly-half enjoyed a glittering playing career, helping
Caerphilly in the Premier Division while also going on to represent Wales ‘A’,
Pontypridd and the Newport Gwent Dragons, before beginning his coaching career
at the Green and Gold’s.
After tasting success with his ‘village’ side, Davey linked up with
Coventry as a player coach before eventually joining up with the Knights in
2009.
He left Doncaster Knights in December of last year after spending three
and a half years at the English Championship side, initially joining as a backs
coach, before taking over the Director of Rugby role.
Davey will be bringing ex Wales Under 21 captain Duane Goodfield with
him as his assistant to Mount Pleasant Park. The former Cardiff Blues and
Newport Gwent Dragons hooker had to retire from professional rugby in 2011 due
to injury.
In
the past few seasons, Goodfield has been learning his coaching trade at
Pontyclun, where he led the Badgers to promotion in his first season before
narrowly missing out this year on back to back promotion, losing out in the
Third Division Play-Off.
