Welsh Premier League champions The New Saints face
a tough draw in the second round of qualifying for the Champions League, as
they take on Poland’s Legia Warsaw.
The
Welsh Champions did have a shot at securing a glamour tie against Scottish
giants Celtic after they were drawn in the same group, but will instead head to
the Polish capital.
TNS
will play their home tie on the weekend of July 16/17 and the away leg a week
later.
Meanwhile,
the Welsh Premier League’s European debutants Airbus Broughton UK, Bala and
Prestatyn Town will all be heading east in the opening round of qualification
for the Europa League competition.
Airbus
and Prestatyn were both drawn against Latvian opposition, facing FK Ventspils
and SK Metalurgs respectively.
Ventspils
has a winning track record against Welsh clubs having beaten TNS and Llanelli in
recent years. The Saints lost on the away goals rule in 2007/8, while Llanelli
lost 4-1 on aggregate the following season. The Latvians reached the Champions League
group stages in 2009/10.
The
Lakesiders will be heading to Estonia and will face Levadia Talinn in the city
that was voted European Capital of Culture for 2011.
Both Bala and Prestatyn will be using Rhyl’s Belle
Vue for their home legs, with the Lakesiders in action on Tuesday, and Prestatyn facing SK Metalurgs there two days later.
